“Stop Your Worries”

School Holiday Program

Welcome to Mindful Kiddo and CHILD SA School Holiday Program “STOP YOUR WORRIES”

A school holiday program with a series of pre-recorded videos and materials to print out that are focused on understanding anxiety, helping children and their carers to understand and manage their worries.

Mindfulness and Emotional Regulation
Being mindful can be a fun and effective way to nurture the awareness of the mind-body connection for children. It involves ‘tuning in’ to the present moment – whatever the moment may be and focusing on it completely. Being mindful also helps in recognising worries in the mind and body. Children learn to recognise emotions in their body, name them and cope with them. We use amazing sensory tools to help them in the process and make it fun!

Body Balance and Fun games
We emphasise the importance of movement, muscle memory and fun to teach children the necessary life skills. Play builds self-esteem, improves social skills, increases body awareness, allows personal creativity to grow and shine. Physical activity improves balance and coordination from an early age. Children learn how to use their body to release stress, manage their anxiety and difficult
emotions. If we want to teach our children useful skills – it needs to be exciting!

Cognitive Behavioural Techniques
Sometimes children’s worries can seem insignificant or unnecessary to adults. But for the child that is experiencing the worries, they are very real. Sometimes children can use logic to cope with anxiety, but often simple techniques can make difference. Cognitive restructuring, reframing, journaling, or progressive relaxation techniques are some of the examples.

MINDFUL MONDAY

TIPS FOR PARENTS AND EDUCATORS

We all feel a little anxious or worried at times, even young children. It can be especially hard for children to understand the feelings in their body that anxiety causes and it is difficult when children don’t have the words to tell an adult how they are feeling and what is going on for them. This video and tip sheet are designed to help parents recognise when a child may be having some difficulty with anxiety, what signs to look for, strategies to help manage anxiety, as well as where to seek further help.
